Itinerari Culturali del Consiglio d'Europa

For a few years the idea of “Cultural Itinerary” has been added to the wide range of “types” of Cultural Heritages, constituting the most complex one, both in its specification and identification and in its designing and handling. Moreover,  a cultural itinerary is strictly connected to the landscape which, in its turn, is an articulated Cultural heritage containing  further Cultural heritages. The concept of “itinerary” is linked to the concept  of road, route, movement.  The first kind of cultural route is the one following the tracks of an ancient path, of a historical route which has kept its function, despite the passing of centuries.   In fact, the concept of itinerary is much wider: new itineraries may be  originated according to a theme, to a special kind of cultural heritage or to any natural or industrial feature characterizing a region.

An itinerary is a new kind of enlarged cultural heritage playing as a connector among cultural heritages, no matter if they are different or homogenous with one another and giving birth to a new system of knowledge. An itinerary is a mental  process based on the identification of  features, either already existing or to be created, and which may result from both a historical analysis and a brand new design.

The itinerary, as a planning tool, is able to start an actual action of protection and preservation. (Maria Chiara Pozzana).

The project European Cultural Itineraries was accepted  by the Council of Europe in 1987. The basic idea is to demonstrate, through paths across space and time, how the heritage of different countries represents the foundation of the European cultural heritage. The Cultural Itineraries effectively demonstrate the fundamental principles of the Council of Europe; human rights, cultural democracy, diversity and European cultural identity, communication, cultural exchange and enrichment. The first example, the

Santiago di Compostela Route
, has represented a source of inspiration and a reference point for the other 32 itineraries acknowledged by the European Institute of Cultural Itineraries, situated in Luxembourg. Web : http://www.culture-routes.lu
